What You Should Know Before Hanging Your Picture Frames
Now that you have taken the time to select and assemble your picture frame you are ready for the important job of hanging your picture frame on the wall. Hanging a picture isn’t difficult, but there are a few steps to take before you begin. This article will walk you through the different ways to hang your picture frame and give you some important steps to make hanging your frame easier.
Ways to Hang Your Frame
There are three main ways to hang picture frames: nails, screws and adhesives.
Nails
The most common and least expensive way to hang picture frames is with finishing nails. Finishing nails are easy to install and won’t create a large hole in your wall- if you use a small nail. Always hammer the nail into a wall stud at a 45 degree angle. If you’re hanging heavy or large picture frames, it’s important to put the nail in a stud. Don’t take a chance of damaging your picture frame, or your sheetrock, by hammering your nail directly into sheetrock that won’t hold the weight of your picture frame. If you don't know how to locate a wall stud, the best way is to use a stud finder (available at any hardware store).
Screws
Hanging picture frames on concrete, stone or brick walls requires the extra strength and support of screws. Screws make larger holes so you generally don’t use them on a regular sheet rocked wall. In order to secure screws into brick or concrete you will need to pre-drill a hole using a mason drill bit and make the hole smaller than the size of the screw. You can also use a screw anchor to help properly secure the screw in the wall.
Adhesives
The third way to hang picture frames is by using adhesives. They are fast and simple and don’t require a hole in your wall. Adhesives, like 3M's Command Strips, are becoming increasingly more popular and are available in hooks or velcro. Always read the instructions carefully as the weight limitations and instructions must be closely followed. Hanging small picture frames with adhesives works best, but some adhesives will hold up to 5 pounds. If the picture is too heavy for the adhesive to hold, you could damage your picture so use with caution.
Your next step, after deciding how to hang your wall frame, is to decide where your frame should be hung.
Hanging Your Wall Picture Frame
When hanging your picture frames on the wall, it is best have someone help you with this step. You can have them hold the frame at different positions on the wall so you can find the perfect spot. If you’re unsure of what height to hang your frame, it is generally recommended that the picture frame be hung around eye level, or about 3/4 of the way up the wall.
If you’re hanging multiple wall picture frames, it’s best to decide upon the spacing of each frame before you start hanging them on the wall. Hanging multiple frames can be tricky so to make your wall look coordinated and well put together, arrange them on the floor until you’re satisfied with the look. For best results, follow these steps:
- Measure the wall area where the picture frames will hang.
- Take a string and outline the measured wall space on the floor.
- Carefully place your frames on the floor (on top of a blanket or towel if there's no carpet) and arrange them until you're satisfied.
- Once you have the right placement on the wall then transfer this placement on the wall. If possible, have someone help you as it will be easier with two people. If you have an empty wall with nothing hanging there, begin to hang your picture frames by starting in the center of your arrangement and working outwards. If you have other things on the wall and don't have much space, then you should start on one side and work to the other end using the floor arrangement measurements.
- Before placing the nail or screw, check the back of the frame and see where the hanger is placed so you don’t make your frame higher or lower than you expect. And if you want to be sure your frames are straight, use a small level to double check.

What to do if you find a dangerous picture of your 12year old daughter holding a gun to her head?
My 12year old daughter stayed with her one day to be step mom and her step sister over the weekend. She made pictures of her time with them and posted them on her myspace, but one picture revealed a beautiful picture of her smiling with a handgun pointed to her head. What do I do next? Should I get a hold of her father? Should I tell her therpist? Should I call child abuse? Should I call the police? What do I do? Help please anyone!!!!
ok-are you saying your daughter went to visit her father,stepmom,and stepsister and this is when this happened? you started the question off w/missing info.
if this is the case then you need to immediately talk with her father number 1. this gun MIGHT not have been real (toy guns can look so real these days) and she might have thought of it as a funny joke. stress to him the importance of this matter and he needs to help you get to the bottom of it if he wants to continue having visitation.
then you should talk to your daughter. find out what the circumstances surrouding the photo were-if this was a toy, who it belonged to if not,etc. my guess is it wasn't real and she was just goofing off.
if after talking w/her dad and to her-you still feel that the gun was real then i would call CPS at once and the police. your daughter's safety is most important and if the gun WAS real-she is in immediate danger at her father's house and shouldn't be allowed to return there
