Choosing Walnut Flooring: Going With a Uniform or Contrasting Look
Certain hardwoods are known for having a contrasting appearance between the heartwood and sapwood: Walnut, hickory, and tigerwood are some of the more popular species. Out of these three, walnut flooring is characterized by heartwood with a dark brown to purplish black color and white or tan sapwood. Nevertheless, an even appearance is common in higher grades of unfinished hardwood, and walnut is steamed to create this effect. If you like the look of walnut for your space, which one should you choose?
Clear and Select grades, the highest two for unfinished hardwood, are generally known for having even appearances, with Select having only hints of character marks. Higher grades of walnut hardwood are likely steamed to create this even tone; however, if an overall uniform dark color is what you want for your home, higher grades of walnut flooring create this effect.
#1 and #2 common grades generally have more character marks than Select or Clear. The patina of the wood may have visible knots, some color variation, or mineral streaks. Value-grade flooring, also known as factory seconds, has the greatest concentration of character marks, and because of this, it does not meet the manufacturer's standards and is sold at a significantly lower price. Lower grades of walnut flooring have the greatest contrast between the heartwood and sapwood; value-grade walnut has this feature and additional character marks. If contrast is what you want for your space, #1 or #2 common grade flooring likely has the look you need.
No matter the grade of hardwood you choose, unfinished walnut flooring is not difficult to install. With a Janka scale rating of 1010, walnut is durable but not too dense and has good shock resistance. Being not too dense makes walnut ideal for machining and sanding. Although walnut has a grain arrangement similar to hickory, it does not have similar finishing problems.
Finishing for walnut flooring, however, poses another set of problems. A darker stain obscures the contrast between the heartwood and sapwood, creating an unintended uniform appearance. Walnut flooring still needs to be finished, and to preserve the contrast, applying multiple coats of polyurethane varnish, with sanding in between, is recommended.

I am moving into a new house and was hoping for suggestions on what color walls would look good with dark walnut flooring I have dark brown leather furniture, and All doors and trim are bright white. I love the virtual paint tools at the better homes and gardens web site.
You sign up to use the service, and they send you a ton of e-mails, but I've not come across a better virtual tool that allows you to control so many aspects of the room. You can select floor color and furniture color to reflect what you already have and then try out different paint and print the picture to see what you like on the wall.
With dark flooring, I'd go light. Pastel yellow, warm creams, pastel pink will give a warm feeling to the room. If you want to go cooler, very pastel green or very light blue might be good. Painting color choice is very personal. What you like is what YOU like. Try it out and see.
I think a light tan would be good, and I'd accent with yellows and oranges, but my husband prefers blues. That's why the paint-a-room tool is great. You can get print outs that you and those who will share the space can agree on.
(I print them out because my color card on the computer doesn't give me a good indication of the way the colors look. You might not have to print them out.)
